The Door Campaign is eager to announce a proposal for Our S.P.A.C.E., a plan to bring new amenities to Our SPACE, will offer a Spray Park, Aquaponics Center, & Educational opportunities for the neighborhood. The initiative will retrofit existing unused park amenities to provide new recreational and economic opportunities for the neighborhood’s youth and adults alike.
Spray Park. Aquaponics Center. Education.
The three central components of Our S.P.A.C.E. integrate the strengths of TDC’s existing programs with priorities and needs in Manchester and the broader Northside community.
Spray Park. The construction of a spray park and community space will invite walkable, family-friendly recreation for the Manchester neighborhood. In response to suggestions from the community, TDC is also exploring building a community kitchen in the pool house which would encourage summer cookouts and increase overall intergenerational accessibility of the park.
Aquaponics Center. Using the same principles from our classroom-based Youth STEM Curriculum, we will cultivate healthy food for the region in a large-scale aquaponics facility. The Our S.P.A.C.E. Aquaponics Center will provide nutritious, locally-grown fish and vegetables for the neighborhood and region. TDC is establishing partnerships with community and restaurant partners, who will be purchase our farm-raised fish and aquaponically-grown produce for use in their kitchens. By purchasing our produce, local restaurants will support our youth education programs.
Education. Our S.P.A.C.E. will serve as an experiential learning hub and field trip destination for youth in The Door Campaign's STEM/Aquaponics program. The Aquaponics Center will build partnerships with educational institutions, provide internships, produce food to sell to Pittsburgh's sustainable restaurants, and offer community programming.
