The Door Campaign is creating a permanent and large-scale space for aquaponics in Pittsburgh. Their planned facilities will be the largest aquaponics greenhouse in the region.
The Door Campaign is currently working with the City of Pittsburgh and a team of architects and designers to convert unused city swimming pools for use as tanks capable of raising fish and plants on a broader scale.
These ambitious long-term plans will open opportunities for partnerships with communities as well as restaurants and institutional partners, who will be able to purchase farm-raised fish and hydroponically grown plants for use in their kitchens. These partnerships will provide local, sustainable food production while also generating sustained revenue.
Students will be closely involved in sharing design ideas for the facilities, and will take part in maintaining the aquaponics tanks.
